The Blocking of Zawia 3 is a Serious Escalation in Egypt’s Restrictions on Press Freedom

Access Center for Human Rights (ACHR) , alongside +30 international and Egyptian human rights organizations and Arab media outlets, has issued a joint statement condemning the Egyptian authorities’ decision to block Zawia 3, an independent media platform known for its investigative reporting and commitment to journalistic integrity.

The move is part of a wider crackdown on press freedom and digital rights in Egypt, where the government has systematically targeted independent news websites and human rights platforms. Over 500 news and human rights websites have been blocked in recent years, with authorities increasingly relying on legal and technical censorship measures to stifle independent journalism.

Egypt’s escalating digital repression threatens not only press freedom but also civic space as a whole, further isolating Egyptians from independent and fact-based reporting. The signatories urge the international community to act decisively to hold Egypt accountable and push for a free and open media environment.
